Concept / feasibility

Share the destination, preliminary topology, estimated quantities and target dates. Identify assumptions and unresolved inputs; request a preliminary review.

Tender / detailed design

Provide the latest SLD, specification, bill of quantities (BOQ), OEM interface data and utility requirements. Record document revisions and permitted deviations.

Procurement / replacement

Provide the approved technical schedule and interface drawings available. For replacement work, add nameplates, dimensions, cable connections and outage constraints.

Electrical & operating conditions

Ratings and winding arrangement
State required power and winding voltages, frequency, phase, vector group, neutral / earthing arrangement, impedance and tapping requirements. Identify which values are preliminary.
Duty and thermal basis
Describe the loading cycle, auxiliary or reverse-power operation if applicable, reactive-power duty, cooling arrangement and temperature-rise basis. Agree the rating basis with the connected-equipment data.
Power quality and switching
Provide available harmonic spectra, converter switching information, DC injection limits where relevant, energisation scenarios and power-quality studies. Confirm required analysis and mitigation responsibilities.
Fault and insulation coordination
Provide fault levels and duration, protection philosophy, insulation requirements and available earthing / surge studies. Confirm equipment ratings and coordination at each boundary.
Losses, efficiency and sound
State the destination and contractual loss, efficiency and sound criteria, including evaluation and test conditions. Guaranteed values require an agreed technical schedule; no universal performance values are assumed.

Site, installation & environment

Location and climate

Provide altitude, minimum / maximum ambient temperatures, humidity, condensation risk and solar exposure. Confirm the environmental design basis and any derating with the selected supplier.

Coastal, dusty or corrosive sites

Specify salt exposure, pollution, dust, sand and other corrosive conditions. Agree coating, enclosure, insulation and verification requirements against site and destination requirements.

Installation and access

Confirm indoor / outdoor location, footprint, ventilation, cable entry, terminations, lifting route and service clearances. For turbine integration, request the OEM dimensional and mechanical constraints.

Civil works and logistics

Identify foundation and anchoring interfaces, transport access, handling limits and storage conditions. Clarify responsibility for oil containment, fire provisions, flood and seismic requirements where applicable.

Transformer package
Confirm the number and function of transformers, cooling, accessories, monitoring, terminations, spare parts and installation interfaces.
Distribution equipment
Identify required switchgear, feeder arrangements, compact / prefabricated substations and auxiliary distribution. Availability and package integration must be confirmed for the specific project.
Grid-interface items
Clarify metering, instrument transformers, protection relays, interlocks, earthing, communications and plant-control interfaces. Mark customer, utility, OEM and equipment-supplier responsibilities.
Studies, settings and approval
Identify who prepares and approves grid studies, relay settings, protection coordination and utility submissions. Grid connection acceptance must follow the project and destination requirements; it is not established by equipment supply alone.

Technical clarification & deliverables

Clarify before quotation
Use a requirement register to record the source document, revision, responsible party, open question and agreed response. Separate confirmed inputs from assumptions and proposed deviations.
Agree the document schedule
Request the applicable datasheet, general arrangement, terminal / cable-interface drawings, schematics and accessory schedule. Confirm which documents are included, their review stages and language.
Agree verification and handover
Define inspection and test requirements, witness / hold points if needed, acceptance criteria, records, packing information and operation / maintenance documents in the contract.
Keep approvals traceable
Record the accepted technical baseline and control later changes. Confirm who releases documents and equipment for the next stage; deliverables and timing depend on the agreed supply scope.

Scenario FAQ

Can one specification cover both solar and wind transformers?

Only after reviewing each duty and interface. Provide inverter or turbine OEM data, winding requirements, loading and installation conditions. Keep any shared requirements separate from application-specific requirements.

We only have a preliminary SLD. Can we start an RFQ?

Yes. Share the SLD revision, destination, project stage, estimated equipment scope and target schedule. Mark unknowns as “To be confirmed”; a preliminary enquiry does not establish final ratings or a confirmed offer.

Can the published transformer be used with our inverter or wind turbine?

That requires technical review. Share the OEM interface requirements, electrical duty, harmonic information, protection basis and installation constraints. A catalogue listing is not confirmation of compatibility.

Who confirms grid-code compliance and connection approval?

Identify the project engineer, utility / network operator and relevant approval parties. Provide the applicable grid requirements and allocate studies, controls, protection and submission responsibilities. Equipment procurement does not itself grant connection approval.

What should we provide for high-altitude, hot or coastal sites?

Provide measured or specified site conditions, including altitude, temperature range, humidity and salt / pollution exposure. Agree any thermal, insulation, enclosure, coating and test requirements for the project; suitability is not assumed.

Does a wind-turbine transformer standard cover the entire wind farm?

Do not assume this. The IEC/IEEE 60076-16:2018 catalogue distinguishes turbine step-up transformers from transformers connecting multiple turbines to a network. Confirm the applicable standard, edition and scope for each equipment item.

Are drawings, tests and commissioning included?

Confirm the document schedule, inspection and test scope, site services and commissioning responsibilities in the quotation and contract. They are not automatically included by this application page.
